joy

I don’t know about you, but I wasn’t born into joy.

Most people aren’t, even though it is a baby’s natural state.  And the truth is, because they are born into this world, most babies don’t stand much of a chance of remaining their joyful selves for very long.

But more and more, I find myself telling clients that creating and maintaining a state of joy, peace and love is the most important thing they must do.

I say this all the time:  “I know it sounds very ‘California,’ but your centered-ness has to come first.

And recently, I have been seeing this as a complete lifestyle change that has to happen in order for anything else to shift in a meaningful way in the client’s life.

So naturally, after of saying the same thing over and over to my clients, I realize that the message is just as much for me as for them.

Which is really no big surprise since, as I mentioned, I wasn’t exactly born into joy.

Actually, I was born into a family steeped in misery and poverty consciousness.  My father was addicted to alcohol and drugs.  He would soon die from his addictions.  And my mother… suffice it to say, I’ve written volumes of poetry about my mother…and the well doesn’t seem to show any signs of drying up anytime soon.  I became an angry teenager who wore a lot of black.  Capricorn with Scorpio rising, pessimistic and surly.

So you might say I had to be born again to joy.  Or more accurately, I have to be born to it again and again throughout any given day.  And then I have  (chosen) to become a sort of midwife to help others be born to it within themselves.   Kind of funny how the Universe works, huh?

But let me stop here to define what I mean by joy.  I am not necessarily talking about the jumping-up-and-down feeling of just having won the lottery, although that is always nice.  Usually what I mean when I refer to joy is the quiet variety that looks at the world through appreciative eyes, a little closer to contentment than exuberance.  But to me, joy, peace and love are one in the same.

But here’s one thing I know:  whatever you call it, this connected feeling that doesn’t come from eating, drinking, or buying anything “out there,” it is the first, if not the only key to opening the door to meaningful change and fulfillment.

When I was a student in the Creating Abundance class I now teach, one of the  lessons that affected me the most was a simple one called “Are You Flowing the Goal?”  It likened the manifestation of a heartfelt desire to the piloting of a plane.  On any flight, there are factors such as turbulence, weather, other aircraft, that take the plane off-course.  The pilot’s main job is to keep correcting course by bringing the plane back on course.

This is living joyfully, noticing when we are off-course and bringing ourselves back to center again and again, until being on-course is once again our natural way of being.  And from this place, all things are possible.  Inspiration comes.  The work we are meant to do flows from us.  Struggle subsides.  Synchronicities happen.  We begin to live the lives we were born to live.
