Creating a Life of Successful Days
You've probably had the same experience at one time or another: a message coming to you in several different ways. Recently, for me, it has been this idea of creating success on a daily basis, in small ways, in the moment. And this idea has had me re-evaluate what success in the larger picture meant to me.
A successful life is comprised of successful days. It is a deceptively simple statement, but, if looked at closely, it shines with an unmistakable brilliance. Take it one step further. A successful day is filled with successful moments. The closer you look at it, the more apparent this truth.
When seen from this vantage point, it becomes clear that the path to success is much simpler than we have previously imagined. One reason many people find themselves striving for and chasing the seemingly elusive experience of success is that the way success is generally defined is as something to be “gotten” and had at a later time.
Think about that. I did. This New Year’s Eve, I was sitting around with some friends, sipping champagne and talking about what we wanted to create in our lives in the upcoming year. And there it was, in the air above us. We all wanted it. Some of us even knew how we defined it, but I could see what was happening. We all held it at arm’s length, looking at it as something to be attained. We were going have it in love, we were going to have it in business, but it was definitely something we were going to do, something that was going to happen.
Are you getting this? You might see a theme emerging (remember my recent article titled “When’s it Gonna Happen?”). If you are beginning to understand that part of the equation, great. But stay with me, there’s another point I want to make.
The first step to creating and experiencing success is to define what it means to you. And that actually does mean getting a little into the future, as my friends and I did the other night.
But, the next step is where the excitement comes in. It is in the creation of each day as a mini-model of that definition of success AND the celebration—in the present moment—of that success.
We can choose success in this moment. And every other moment.
If we can take responsibility for creating success in each moment of our lives, we will get better and better at this process. Soon, the experience will be automatic.
It may be tempting to shift to the external from time to time and slip into defining success again by what is (seemingly) happening “out there” and what others are doing or not doing and how we are automatically wanting to respond to that. But if we keep reminding ourselves that success is something we create, something we are creating, our experiences will soon shift in that direction.
So, if you consciously create success in a day by doing activities that will bring you what you desire, and by being the person you want to be, the person who would create the experience of life you desire, that which you desire is on its way to you regardless of what seems to be happening (or not happening)—as long as you can keep your eye on the vision of success (as opposed to the temporary illusion of lack).
To take it even further, I suggest planning your day based on the model for success you’ve created, holding yourself accountable for what you have agreed to do throughout the day and most importantly, during your self-evaluation period each evening.
